What to wear for a passport photo
You're photographed from the shoulders up against a white background, so the top half of your outfit is the only part that matters. The goal is to look like your everyday self, with nothing covering the face.
Clothes
- Wear a mid-tone or dark top: navy, black, burgundy, forest green, grey. They contrast with the white background.
- Avoid white and cream: they blend into the background and can make the photo look washed out.
- Avoid uniforms and camouflage: they aren't allowed in US passport photos.
- Collars and necklines: anything everyday works. Very low necklines can look like no top against the background.
Glasses, jewellery and accessories
- Glasses: take them off. They're not allowed without a medical note.
- Jewellery: fine if it doesn't cover the face. Skip large statement pieces that catch the light.
- Hats, headbands, headphones: off. Religious head coverings worn daily are allowed if the full face shows.
Hair and makeup
- Hair: off the eyes and away from the face outline. Long hair can go over the shoulders or behind them.
- Makeup: your normal everyday makeup. Matte is better than shiny; shine reads as glare.
Babies and toddlers
Put them in a plain coloured top (not white, since they'll be lying on a white sheet), and take off hats, bows and pacifiers. See the baby passport photo guide for the full method.

Questions people ask
Can I wear white in a passport photo?
It's allowed, but white clothing blends into the white background and can make your head look like it's floating. A mid-tone or darker top works better.
Can I wear earrings or a necklace?
Yes, as long as they don't cover your face. Small jewellery is fine.
Can I wear makeup?
Yes. Everyday makeup is fine. Avoid heavy shine and anything that changes how you normally look.
Can I wear a hat or headband?
No, unless it's a religious or medical head covering you wear every day, and your full face is visible.
What should my baby wear?
A plain coloured top, not white. Remove hats, bows and headbands.
